Education System

Singapore operates largely on the British system, although there are American influences in some universities. The language of instruction is English. The university school year runs from July through April.

Cost

The tuition cost at the 2 universities listed below is S$ 6050 per year. The Singaporean government heavily subsidizes the cost of university education in Singapore. In return, all students, including foreign students, are expected to work in Singapore for 3 years after graduating.

Living costs are estimated at S$ 400-500/month.

International students can obtain loans for up to 80% of their tuition costs and can work part-time: up to 16 hours per week during the school year and more during vacations.

National University of Singapore

Description

Faculties at the National University of Singapore include Design and Environment, Arts and Social Sciences, Business, Dentistry, English, Law, Medicine, Science and Computing.

 

Application for Admission

You must apply by April 1 and the academic year runs from July-April. Obtain the application from the office of admissions. Admitted students must take a qualifying English test at the end of June. TOEFL and IELTS scores may be submitted.

 

Cost

The tuition is S$ 6050 per year. Accommodation at a residence hall costs S$ 2000 per year.

Note: the cost is low because the Singaporean government heavily subsidizes the university. In return, students are expected to work for 3 years in Singapore after their graduation.

 

Financial Aid

There are S$3000 ASEAN scholarships for undergraduates. You can obtain information from the admissions office.

All full-time matriculated students of the University are eligible to apply for the Tuition Fee Loan which will pay up to 80% of the tuition fees payable. Undergraduates who are enable to pay the balance of 20% of tuition fees may then apply for bursaries or loans. Students may also apply to use their own, parents or siblings' investible savings in their CPF accounts to pay the fees.

Bursaries are straight-out grants, awarded on the basis of financial need and do not exceed $1500/-. Students who envisage financial difficulties in the forthcoming academic year may apply for bursaries in semester one when the applications are being invited. Students who subsequently encounter difficulties due to unforeseen circumstances after the main exercise may approach the office-in-charge in the Office of Student Affairs. Other than bursaries, students may also apply for loans which may be tenable for the year or course. The value and conditions of leans vary. Please refer to table for further details. After securing approval of the committee or donor, award for bursaries and loans will be credited to the individual's account in Bursar's Office. All fees due to University will then be deducted from the award and the balance paid to the student's bank account within 3 months of application.

Nanyang Technological University

Description

Nanyang Technological University offers courses in accountancy, business, computer engineering, communications, the arts, and science. It is a hybrid of the British and American educational systems.

 

Applying for Admission

You must also send the following to the International Students Unit:

Certified copies (not the originals) of:

A bank draft of S$20 or US$15 payable to "Nanyang Technological University" for the application fee. Please write your name, address and telephone number on the reverse side of the bank draft. An application received without the fee will not be processed. Please do not send cash.

TOEFL is not required, but applicants can submit their TOEFL results. There is a Qualifying English Test in July for all new students.

No letters of recommendation are required.

The closing date for submission of application is as follows:

Short-listed applicants may be required to sit for an Entrance Examination for final decision on admission. Details will be posted to short-listed applicants in due course.
