NHPRC Invites Applications for Fellowship in Archival Administration

The National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) is now accepting applications from individuals for its Fellowship in Archival Education, which provides advanced administrative training in archives. One fellowship will be awarded for the 2000-2001 academic year, to be hosted by the Special Collections Department of the University of Virginia Library. The stipend for the archival fellow is $35,000, plus an additional $7,000 for fringe benefits. The fellowship is for a nine- to twelve-month period beginning between August and October 2000. The fellow will also have some funds available for professional travel during his or her fellowship year. The application postmark deadline is March 15, 2000.
Fellows are provided with a series of administrative and decision-making experiences. In addition to work in these areas, the fellow is expected to complete a technical project. Fellowship applicants should have between two and five years of experience in professional archival work. While not required, it is desirable that applicants have the equivalent of two semesters of full-time graduate training in a program containing an archival education component.

Host Institution: Special Collections Department of the University of Virginia Library, Charlottesville, VA. The department will assist the fellow by providing an overview of administrative responsibilities in both the department and the library. The fellow's technical project will involve developing a plan for moving the collections of the department to their new home in a Special Collections Library to be built adjacent to Alderman Library. The Special Collections Department administers over 237,000 rare books, 3,500 maps, 4,000 broadsides, 133,960 photographs and prints, 9,600 reels of microfilm, nearly 90,000 microfiche, and substantial holdings of audio recordings, motion picture film, and ephemera, in addition to manuscript holdings of over 10.2 million items and the University Archives of over 2.5 million items.

Fellowship application forms and a more complete description of the program should be requested from the NHPRC, National Archives and Records Administration, 700 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Room 111, Washington, DC 20408-0001; (202) 501-5610 (voice); (202) 501-5601 (fax); or nhprc@arch1.nara.gov (email). The application is also available on the NHPRC's web site: http://www.nara.gov/nhprc/edprog.html.
Following the receipt of applications, the Commission will provide eligible fellowship applications to the host institution, which will select a fellow by mid-May 2000.
