Project Archivist
Department of Special Collections
Term Appointment

The University of Chicago Library is seeking an experienced archivist for a two-year term appointment to process selected twentieth-century manuscript and archival collections.  Two extensive collections of professional papers will be the principal focus of the position: the papers of Edward H. Levi, University of Chicago president, provost, and law school dean; and the papers of Philip M. Klutznick, Chicago real estate developer, civic leader, and philanthropist.  The Klutznick papers project includes a component for selective digitization.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direction of the Associate Curator of Special Collections and University Archivist, the Project Archivist is responsible for the following duties:

Arrangement and Description: Arranges, describes, and catalogs designated modern manuscript and archival collections; assures appropriate archival housing for collections; identifies and refers items for preservation treatment; prepares finding aids, guides, and other descriptive access tools; participates in EAD program for encoded finding aids; selects items for digitization where included in project plan.

Supervision:  Trains and supervises the work of support staff and students who may be assigned to assist with arrangement and description of manuscript and archival collections; assigns tasks and monitors pace and direction of work by support staff; maintains schedules and deadlines; evaluates staff performance.

Other Duties: Submits regular reports on manuscript and archival processing; supports and participates in other work of the department as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Master?s degree from an ALA-accredited program along with three years of related manuscript and archival experience; supervisory experience preferred; ability to conceptualize and organize large collections in diverse formats; ability to meet project goals and deadlines; knowledge of MARC format, APPM, and other standards for description of manuscript and archival materials; familiarity with EAD DTD for digital encoding of manuscript and archival finding aids; excellent writing skills; judgment and discretion; excellent communication and interpersonal skills including ability to interact with donors.
