Travel Grants to UCSB Libraries

THE FRIENDS OF THE UCSB LIBRARY
2000 TRAVEL GRANTS

The Friends of the UCSB Library are pleased to offer travel grants of up
to $750 each, to encourage use of the University Libraries, University of
California, Santa Barbara research collections. The Libraries' strengths
include collections relating to the history of the American West, ethnic
groups of California, Abraham Lincoln, slavery and abolition, the Civil
War, American diplomatic history, book arts, California presses, printing
history, 19th and 20th century American and British literature,
non-mainstream American religions, trade catalogs, remote-sensing images,
foreign topographic map series, digital geospatial data, art exhibition
and auction catalogs, microform photo-archives, performing arts, and UCSB
history.

Grants are intended for scholars who reside beyond commuting distance to
the university, to help defray expenses for traveling to and residing in
Santa Barbara. The length of stay will depend on the applicant's research
proposal, but grants generally are intended for visits of up to one
week. The amount awarded is based primarily on distance traveled. Grants
may be used from June 2000 to May 2001.

Faculty, independent scholars, or students working on advanced degrees are
eligible to apply. Upon completion of their stay, grant recipients are
asked to provide a brief 2-3 page statement of their research
findings. These may be used in one of the University Libraries'
publications.

A committee consisting of faculty, library staff, and Friends members will
award the travel grants on the basis of relevance of the proposal to the
holdings of the Libraries, the merits and significance of the project, and
the qualifications of the applicant.

Applications must be received by February 29, 2000. Successful applicants
will be notified by March 15, 2000.

For further information about the application process or UCSB's
collections, please contact David C. Tambo, Head of Special Collections,
