Re: Working with university development offices

Hello Jill,
I was cleaning out my email when I came across your interesting message. I wondered if you would be willing to share your findings and experience working with your development people. I think this is an excellent idea. Occasionally we (the Libraries) have had an opportunity to work with a development person, and probably will again soon, since KU is gearing up for another major fund drive. I am also working with our Center for Research, Inc. in looking for grant opportunities, not just for University Archives or special collections generally, since I am also the University Libraries' grant/research coordinator.
Thank you,
Kathleen Neeley

Last fall the UTSA Archives and the development office began to work
together in pursuit of major foundation grants for capital improvements
and program development for the archives. As the development office
learned more about the Archives they began to realize that university
development itself could benefit from growing and promoting the
Archives. They realized that because the Archives has focused on
documenting local history, and recently began targeting the papers of San
Antonio's leading civic and business families, that precisely the
families whose names appear with regularity on development's lists of
prospective donors are those the archives hope to approach as well.

Consequently one of the development officers has posted a question about
development offices and archives working together to listservs for
university advancement, and asked me to make a similar inquiry with
archivists.

He and I would like to hear from archivists with experience working
successfully (or unsuccessfully) with university development to cultivate
donors (financial) and facilitate planned giving (or large gifts), not
just for the archives but for the university in general.

Thanks,

Jill Jackson, Archivist
and
Stephen Cross, Development Assistant
