Re: glass negatives

Contact prints are the obvious answer.

However, a session at the latest AASLH annual meeting discussed scanning glass negatives. The Nebraska Historical Society illustrated what can be done with the right equipment and knowledgeable technicians.

Everyone was astounded to see details in the images, especially in shadows, that were lost in the best prints. If that's the kind of quality you want, then you should contact the Gerald Ford Conservation Center in Omaha for more information.

Ms Davis,
Plate glass negatives are some of the easiest to reproduce. Direct
contact with the paper is all that is needed. SO if your institution has a
dark room or a photo services department you should be ok. I would advise
that you or a trusted associate accompany the negatives to the dark room and
be present for the majority of the printing. This is to protect against
their being mishandled by unscrupulous people who may not know the
importance of the glass or the images.
