Who Decides?

This story was interesting, and brings up again, a very nagging question
for me, that I am sure has been discussed before. There are literally
hordes of volunteers, poring over government (state, county, local)
historical records. The first area of concern is of course, potential
damage to the records themselves; the second area is that of access.

One shot might be all that is available for preservation and access, and
these volunteers are usually genealogists and that is all that is
important to them. And unfortunately they are all too often making
decisions about what happens to the records.

However well-meaning they might be, I am uncomfortable about this as I
have worked closely with a historical society, and I still would rather
have a professional.
