POSITION - UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON
CURATOR, PHOTOGRAPHS AND GRAPHICS

TITLE: Curator, Photographs and Graphics

LOCATION: Manuscripts, Special Collections, University Archives
                     Division

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  The University of Washington Libraries seeks an
experienced
person to oversee a dynamic, user-oriented photograph and graphics
collection in a
large academic research library.  Under the general direction of the Head,
Manuscripts, Special Collections, University Archives Division, the
Photographs and Graphics Curator is responsible for overseeing
intellectual access to the Photograph and Graphics collection, including
photographs, architectural drawings, and maps; supervising implementation
of electronic access and database systems; assisting in the development of
digital library projects; supervising the Non-Book Materials Specialist
and support staff; and initiating and managing outreach activities.  The
successful candidate for this position will have opportunity to
participate in setting policy and in shaping the newly configured Division.


QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:

1. Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library
Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies
degree (archival concentration preferred); or a Masters in Archival
management; or a Masters in a related field with archival concentration.

2. Minimum of three years experience, some of which is with a large
photography collection, including:  appraising acquiring arranging,
describing and preserving photography collections.

3. Understanding of archival principles and organization.

4. Knowledge of the history of photography.

5. Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

6. Technological expertise, including but not limited to training or
experience in Web development and digitizing photograph and graphics
collections.

7. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with donors, staff and
users.

8. Ability to represent the University of Washington Libraries in
various groups and forums.

 Desired:

1. Experience in managing and preserving collections of moving
images.

2. Background in and knowledge of Pacific Northwest or U.S. Western
history.

3. Knowledge of 20th century American architecture.

4. Certification by Academy of Certified Archivists.

SALARY: $ 35,000  minimum.  Starting salary commensurate with
qualifications and background.

Investments) on a matching basis.  Generous vacation; sick leave at the
