The Labor Archives & Research Center seeks to hire  a part-time Photo
Archivist, ten to twelve hours per week, divided into no fewer than two
days, with 1-5 pm necessary.

The Labor Archives is a unit of the J. Paul Leonard Library at San
Francisco State University.  It collects the archives of labor unions and
primary source material relating to working men and women in the Bay Area.
Founded in 1985, the Archives is located in The Sutro Library on the
border of campus.

Applicant should have college degree, preferably in American history or
Museum Studies.  Also, applicant should have experience with caring for
photograph collections, designing exhibits using primary sources and
photographs, and in-house graphic design and publication.  Knowledge of
simple conservation procedures preferred.   Strong experience in computers
is required, including familiarity with Word or Word Perfect and a data
base management program such as FileMaker or Access. Experience with
PageMaker is also preferred.

Photo Archivist will identify, describe, arrange, and preserve visual
images including photographs, posters, small artifacts, art work, and
other items.  Photograph collection consists of approximately 10,000
images, mainly 20th century.   Candidate will handle photograph orders and
work with private photography service.  Exhibits, especially in the
reading room cases, will be another responsibility.  All staff members
serve in the reading room, sometimes being in charge of reference if the
Reference Archivist is not available.

Photo Archivist will work closely with small staff, reporting to Assistant
Director who is in charge of reference.  Duties will include supervising
student assistants and Museum Studies interns and helping conduct classes
in the use of primary sources.

A knowledge of California history with interest in the labor movement and
history of workers is preferred.

The pay is an hourly rate depending on experience, $12 - $17 an hour; no
benefits.  The position is assured for a three-month period with possible
continuation.
