Re: Consulting while Employed

Angela,
I can speak to this from only one recent and one long ago experience. In both instances I was paid by the institutions at which I consulted and was given time off by the employers to do that. One of those was when I worked at a museum library and the other was while I worked as an archivist in a large state university.
I believe that it is fairly standard at all the state universities in Texas that faculty members can do consulting and be paid fees over and above their salary. They usually have to sign a statement that they have been asked to consult because they have a special expertise and that the consulting will not affect their regular job. It is a little cumbersome when the consuting is done for another state agency, but it can still be done with only a bit of paperwork to be completed at both institutions.
A couple of years and again this year I have invited faculty members from other state institutions to present lectures in a lecture series and have been able to present each of them with an honorarium.
I suggest that you ask your employer to allow you to do the consulting and keep all the money and not give up any or your salary. They should look it as recognition of the fact that you have a particular expertise that others are willing to pay good money for. That should be an indication to them that you are a valuable employee.
