CNCS Statement to OAH (fwd)

The press release by OAH leadership that was posted to the listserv
earlier today does not, needless to say, constitute the final word
concerning the Adams Mark Hotel. Subscribers might be interested in the
attached letter, drafted by a coalition seeking to transfer the convention
to another site. Several OAH panelists have already canceled their
presentations in protest. Economic retaliation, after all, always
constitutes a more effective form of protest than the carefully crafted
statement, the high-minded sentiment, and the lofty verbiage that
academics and professional associations often substitute for direct
action.

>Dear Friends:

> As OAH Convention approaches, we have decided to create a formal
>organization to persuade the OAH to sever ties with the Adams Mark and to
>organize demonstrations in St. Louis against the Adams Mark whether or not
>the OAH takes such a step. Our organization is called the Committee for a

>Convention Site(CNCS, pronounced cynics). Its statement of principles,
>expectations, and list of founding members are presented below. If you
>agree with the statement and wish to join the organization; or wish to
>express concerns, register questions, and give opinions you may do so by
>contacting Jeffrey T. Sammons at <Jeffrey.Sammons@nyu.edu>(don't use the

>
> To join CNCS one must be committed to protesting in St. Louis and
>to pledging money to help protect OAH should it suffer damage as a result
>of severing ties with Adam's Mark. For those who cannot commit to one
>and/or both obligations, we still welcome your support. We need to show
>OAH that we are backing it all the way in the fight against Adam's mark and

>OAH to move all activities related to the convention out of the Adam's
>Mark Hotel, including: registration, panels, vendors, meetings, interviews,

> In the event of a settlement, the terms, meaning, enforceability, and
