The Mandeville Special Collections Library at the University of California, San Diego, seeks an archives and manuscripts assistant.

Payroll Title: Library Assistant III 

Under the general supervision of the Associate University Archivist, processes manuscript, archival, photographic, and other non-print materials (i.e. arranges, organizes, describes, and preserves non-print resources) for public research use; performs basic preservation treatment for library materials; coordinates photographic storage and services; carries out special projects as assigned. May serve at the departmental reference desk, interpret online and manual finding aids, disseminate information about the department's holdings, respond to telephone inquiries, and monitor reading room use of collections and provide for their security. 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Work in a high-security environment. Must work occasionally with dirty and dusty materials, and occasional Saturday and Wednesday evenings. 

REQUIRED: Knowledge of basic research methods of core disciplines. Understanding of basic organizing principles of a research library. Skill in English language and writing sufficient to prepare and edit finding aids, database records, collection guides, and to provide public service. Experience with word processing and database management software using microcomputers and printers. Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills. 

PREFERRED: Experience in arranging and describing archival and non-print materials according to accepted national standards. Knowledge of standard procedures for handling fragile archival materials and in selecting proper preservation housings and treatments. Experience using local online bibliographic utilities (ROGER and MELVYL). Experience using FoxPro or similar database management software and in using WordPerfect, Word, or similar word processing software. Knowledge of a western European language (non-English) sufficient for processing materials in that language. Knowledge of photographic processes and techniques sufficient for identification and related preservation practices. Knowledge of contemporary American literature, history of science, or Western Americana. Experience in public services.
