Re: Photograph Cataloging?

'Tis true. I was referring to MARC-AMC. But still, how much use would it
be to have every individual image available in a national database? (I make
exceptions for those images so well known and widely published that they are
always being sought.) Books are individual items available in thousands of
libraries. They also have recognized titles and authors, which simplify the
organization of the records. Many photos have no established title, and
often no photographer (at least in my collection). The information shared
in MARC format allows a time savings for catalogers and Interlibrary Loan
departments, as well as researchers.

My cataloging of a Ringling Bros. Circus image from 1904 in MARC format
would help no more than a few researchers who happened to search these
national systems looking for Ringling Bros. Circus image for 1904. It is
unlikely anyone else needs a copy of my cataloging since the image may well
be unique.

However, it would help many researchers to have a record for a Circus Photo
collection. That would help anyone looking for Ringling Bros., Carson and
Barnes, Big Apple, Sparks, Hagenbeck-Wallace, etc. Once a researcher knows
there is a collection, he can ask for specifics.

Nope, haven't done this yet. We only just upgraded our computer collection
to current standards. Hope to someday have our images on the web, but I'm
still trying to figure out how the fax machine works.
