space requirements

It is my own opinion that original materials should be maintained in
physical form in an archives. Working copies and digitized versions are
fine for providing broader usage of the archival materials without
wearing or damaging the original material. But to consider the
conversion of the materials to electronic means as a permanent solution
and then to dispose of the original materials (particularly rare or
unique materials) to save space is foolish.

And do the finance heads realize the cost of digitization in man hours
and equipment, particularly, of an entire collection or archives? I
expect that the "storage" volume in megabytes and gigabytes of a
digitized collection would require at least one additional and separate
"server" or "drive" to be added to the institution's information system
computers.
