                             JOB OPPORTUNITY
                           Assistant Archivist
     American Civil Liberties Union Archives/Records Management Unit


The ACLU Archives/Records Management Unit is based in the National
Headquarters Office in
New York City.  This unit is responsible for maintaining an in-house
archives (the public
archives of the ACLU are held at Princeton University in the Mudd
Manuscript Library) and
an in-house records center, providing reference service to national and
affiliate staff
and lay leadership, developing records-related policies for the national
office, assisting
offices in the transfer of inactive records to the New York City records
center,
appraising and preparing records for transfer to Princeton, and writing
retention
schedules for all series of active records in any media or format.  The
unit is also
responsible for surveying records of national field offices in Washington
and Atlanta so
that their permanent records can eventually be transferred to Princeton,
providing advice
to affiliates on their dealings with the archival repositories for their
historical
records, and other related activities.  The Archives/Records Management
Unit is also
responsible for the updating and dissemination of the ACLU Policy Guide and
for certain
aspects of the dissemination of information on the ACLU Intranet.

The in-house archives currently holds about 200 cubic feet of records,
publications,
photographs, audio and video tapes, posters, and other artwork and
memorabilia.  The in-
house records center currently contains about 2,000 cubic feet of records.

Specific Responsibilities
     responding to reference inquiries and keeping records of these
activities;
     arranging and describing core archival records as they arrive in the
Archives for
both retention in the New York archives and for transfer to Princeton;
     with ACLU archivist, surveying and appraising records from New York
office
departments and in the field offices;
     supervising volunteers and temporary workers as needed; and
     assisting the Archivist and Records Manager in the drafting and
recording of
retention schedules and in carrying out records disposition procedures.

Qualifications
Applicants must have a graduate degree in history, library science or a
related field;
graduate archival training and at least one year of post-graduate
experience in archival
and records management theory and practice or an equivalent combination of
training and
experience; the ability to lift a 40-lb. box; familiarity with
microcomputer applications
used in archival management and description; as well as excellent
interpersonal and
communications skills and the ability to work independently.  Reference and
appraisal
experience preferred.  Knowledge of 20th-century American history, an
interest in civil
liberties issues, and archival processing and supervisory experience desired.

Salary and Benefits
The starting salary for this position is in the low 30s.  Excellent health
