optical media testimonials?

Hi All,

The market changes so quickly, I thought I'd ask for some testimonials or
advice on the following topic:

Drawing up specs for a new imaging system, I am considering optical media
as one strategy for backups. I do not consider my intent "true" archiving
of the digitized information for this project. Instead, I want the most
sensible, flexible and powerful of the current optical media technologies
currently available as a place to store large image files, and to be able
to physically transport the storage media easily.

I definitely do not want magnetic tape or spinoff technologies, am not
inclined toward magnetic hard disk for this type of high-memory storage
need, and think optical media might be the best choice. There are lots of
optical media choices: CD-ROM and all its subvariants, DVD,
magneto-optical, WORM, WORM-R, and so on. Based upon these choices, I am
leaning toward magneto-optical because it has been around a few years, is
in less of a flux state than DVD, and is not a terribly costly option for
high storage capacity.

If anyone has already done some legwork investigating these options, or can
share some good/bad experiences with optical media, I'd be glad to hear
them. Also, specific drives, company names, etc. are also appreciated. I
made some purchasing decisions in this type of hardware about 3 years ago,
but am sure things have progressed considerably since then.

Thanks in advance.

Chuck
