                   ASSOCIATE ARCHIVIST


 Position Description:
Appraises, accessions, and processes historical materials. Writes inventories
or other relevant finding aids for processed collections. Provides reference
service to visitors, or by telephone, letter, e-mail or fax. Keeps up-to-date
with trends and developments of information related to the archival
profession.
Writes articles for the Urban Archives New Notes. Supervises Assistant
Archivist, Library Clerk and student assistants. Participates in determining
work methods, planning work operations, interviews applicants and makes
effective recommendations. Evaluates staff job performance, provides employee
training and functional guidance. Catalogs all Urban Archives collections in
RLIN. Monitors and updates the Urban Archives Web site. Files, retrieves
record boxes. Contributes to and writes grants. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:
Master's Degree with course work in archival theory and methodology required.
A concentration in history preferred. Minimum 5 years of archival experience
required. Some managerial experience required. Demonstrated knowledge of
archival cataloging using the MARAC format required.Knowledge of
archives-related use of internet and other information technologies, including
HTML, SGML and EAD required. Basic knowledge of Philadelphia history
preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with archival arranging
and processing techniques of manuscript and photographic collections required.
Experience in exhibition and outreach programming preferred. Excellent
interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; ability to work as part
of team and to problem solve from a departmental-wide perspective required.
Lifting boxes weighing up to forty (40)pounds required. Knowledge of and the
ability to search for historical information on internet preferred.
