Archivist Position - Southwest Missouri State Univ.

ARCHIVIST

Southwest Missouri State University (SMSU) seeks applicants for the
position of archivist for the University Archives, a new unit established
in 1997, and the Ozarks Labor Union Archives, a collection of over 2000
linear feet encompassing the records of over 100 local trade unions.  This
new position is key to the department's mission of preserving and providing
access to the archives at SMSU.  The Special Collections and Archives

Responsibilities: processing collections, including arrangement,
description, and preservation activities; compilation of finding aids,
including providing access through the World Wide Web; initiating and
maintaining outreach; reference; and collection development activities for
the University Archives and the Ozarks Labor Union Archives (OLUA).

Qualifications: Master's degree in Library Science (MLS) from an American
Library Association (ALA) accredited program or a graduate degree in
History (or related discipline) with archival certification is required.
Additional requirements: significant graduate-level coursework in archival
administration/theory; two years experience in processing archival
collections, including experience in arrangement, description and online
access; and effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication
skills.  Preferences include experience appraising and processing
twentieth-century organizational labor or university records; knowledge of
labor history and/or union organizations; familiarity with USMARC
cataloging; computer applications; SGML/HTML; experience in outreach
activities and supervision.  Salary: $32,000/annually.  Comprehensive
insurance including health, dental, and life;  State retirement; and
tuition benefits.

The SMSU Libraries contain over one and one-half million items consisting
of 629,000 volumes; 827,099 documents; 184,500 maps; and significant
audio-visual, curriculum, and microfilm collections.  A staff of 30
librarians and 40 support staff serve the needs of the university
community.  The Libraries currently use NOTIS with migration to Innovative
Interfaces III set for 2000.  SMSU is also a member of MOBIUS, a state-wide
common library platform for academic libraries.  Meyer Library is currently
undergoing a major addition and renovation project which will incorporate
state-of-the-art technology with completion expected by 2001.  SMSU is the
second largest public university in Missouri with 18,900 students and more
than 690 faculty.  Springfield is Missouri's third largest city, with a
metropolitan population of 300,000.  For more information on the SMSU
