Position Available - ARCHIVIST - New York



The City College of New York (CUNY) invites applications for:

Position:       Archivist  (Instructor/Assistant Professor)
Department:     Library

Responsibilities:  The Archivist serves as head of the Division of
Archives and Special Collections, a division with over 1700 linear feet
of institutional records and personal papers, 5000 photographs, and
architectural drawings, media and works of art on paper.  Remodeling of a
portion of the division to create an art gallery is in progress.  The
Archivist works with donors, both institutional and private, and
appraises, acquires, processes and creates finding aids for the
collections; creates MARC records for new collections in MicroMARC-based
database; provides reference assistance with the collections in person,
via phone, email and letter.  Special Collections include representative
examples of Western printing from the incunabula period to the modern
era, as well as subject specific collections such as costume books and
the Russell Sage Collection on social welfare (ca. 1880-1940).  The
position includes some responsibility for exhibits and collection
development, and reports to the Chief of Public Services.

Qualifications:  ALA accredited MLS with course work in archives,
cataloging and conservation/preservation. For appointment at the
Assistant Professor rank, second master's degree, preferably in
literature, history or art required. Academy of Certified Archivists
professional certification required for tenure consideration.
Familiarity with issues in electronic records, records management and
security. Two years experience in an archival repository working with
special collections, rare books and manuscripts desired.  Ability to meet
the responsibilities and requirements of a tenure-track appointment,
including research, publishing, and involvement in professional
organizations.  The successful candidate will possess superior written
and oral communication skills, and will be energetic, flexible, and able
to interact successfully with a broad clientele both inside and outside
the institution.

Salary:  Instructor: $29,997-$ 48,284; Asst. Professor: $32,703-$57,049,
commensurate with qualifications and experience. Tenure track position.
