POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Academic Librarian(Archives and Special Collections)

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) is a Carnegie-designated
Research institution committed to academic excellence.  One of two
doctoral degree-granting institutions in the multi-campus University
of Wisconsin system, UWM has an enrollment of over 25,000 students.
The 93 acre campus, an attractive combination of historic buildings
and modern architecture, is located on Milwaukee's east side, near
Lake Michigan, a short drive or bus ride from a wealth of cultural and
recreational resources.  The Golda Meir Library is a modern,
centralized library housing 4.7 million bibliographical items
including the American Geographical Society Collection.  The Division
of Archives and Special Collections includes the University Archives,
the UWM Manuscript Collection, and a collection of rare and special
material with long-term research potential in the arts, humanities,
and social sciences, and also operates an Area Research Center.  (ARC,
part of a statewide cooperative regional archives network administered
by the State Historical Society of Wisconsin.)

Responsibilities: Provide reference services to students, faculty,
and other researchers wishing to use materials from the University
Archives, Area Research Center, UWM Manuscript Collection, Special
Collections and Rare Books, the Fromkin Memorial Collection and other
special collections within the Division.  Conducts outreach to promote
the use of holdings, including assisting with the planning and
coordination of public events hosted by Archives and Special
Collections.  Participates in collection development of the Archives
and Special Collections departments, including assisting with
identifying and acquiring additional archival collections documenting
the history of the metropolitan Milwaukee region, identifying and
recommending for purchase materials for special collections, and rare
books.  Processes and catalogs new acquisitions;  participates in
developing, updating and maintaining the Division Web site; trains,
supervises, and evaluates the performance of student employees.
Advises the Assistant Library Director for Archives and Special
Collections, to whom the position reports, on matters pertaining to
the operation of the Archives.

Qualifications: Required: ALA accredited MLS/MLIS that includes a
minimum of six semester credits of formal archival education.  Two
years of relevant professional experience in archives, records
management work or a related area.  Familiarity with emerging
technologies and their impact on archives, records management, and
special collections services.  Supervisory and interpersonal
communication skills.
Desired: Second advanced degree in a relevant field; record of
professional involvement.

Salary: Academic Librarian.  Minimum salary: $36,960 annually
depending upon qualifications and experience.

Appointment/Benefits: This is a twelve month academic staff annual
probationary appointment leading to indefinite appointment  Generous
