Archives summer internship - 2nd notice
INTERNSHIP AT UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT EL PASO LIBRARY,
SPECIAL COLLECTIONS DEPARTMENT
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Summer, 2000, internship for a graduate student planning a career in an
academic library or archives to work with manuscript materials. The goal
of the internship will be to provide the student with experience in
processing, arrangement, and description of personal papers and
manuscripts. This is a fulltime temporary position classified as Research
Specialist for up to twelve weeks at $400 per week, total not to exceed
$4,800.
Some flexibility is possible, including a tenweek internship, or
twelve 30hour weeks at $10.00 per hour. No health or state retirement
benefits. Internship may begin as early as June 1, 2000.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum of 12 credit hours toward a degree in Library or Information
Science.
Course work or experience working with manuscript materials or archives.
Excellent command of written English.
Strong computer skills, including word processing.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to tolerate occasional exposure to dust and mold.
PREFERRED:
-Familiarity with architectural records or preservation of oversized
materials.
PROJECT AND COLLECTION INFORMATION:
This is an opportunity funded by a grant from the Texas State Library,
Texas Treasures Program. The intern will process three architectural
records
collections, describing, arranging, and performing basic preservation
activities.
The collections are: Otto H. Thorman architectural records, the Morgan
Brothers
photograph collection, and the Archie Benner engineering records. O.H.
Thorman
was an architect in El Paso from 1910-1966 who designed many commercial and
residential buildings, many of which are now in El Paso Historic Districts.
Archie
Benner (not an architect) designed buildings and commercial plants during
his time
with an El Paso architectural firm. These two collections contain office
files,
drawings, and plans. The Morgan Brothers Construction Company built many
commercial and educational buildings throughout Texas and the Southwest,
including several landmark buildings on the University of Austin campus.
This collection contains more than 1000 images, many of which are rolled
panoramas
or glass plate negatives that will pose some preservation challenges.
DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:
The University of Texas at El Paso's C.L. Sonnichsen Special Collections
Department includes book collections on Southwest and Border Studies,
Chicano Studies, Military History, Western Fiction, Printing and Book
Design, Judaica, and Art. The department also houses the University
Library's rare books, theses and dissertations, an oral history collection,
and approximately 400 manuscript and photograph collections. The staff
consists of two professionals, one halftime military history curator, and
three classified staff members.
