Re: Hushpuppies - was Ahem! (blush)

Alas, I have to add to the hush puppies "tale". I am from south and was
raised to have them every New Years Day with our mustard/collard greens &
hog jowl, black-eyed peas, and ham. They sopped up the juices. You were
thirsty all day. I improved our tradition by providing mimosas to the
chef's that day. Made the entire cooking process fun. The reason we had
hushpuppies when frying fish is that we used the hush-puppies to "clean" the
oil when deep frying fish. I don't know...that is what my dad said.

Here is a bit more information on the topic of extended
discussion.

In this part of the world, hushpuppies are most commonly
served with french fries and fried fish. Thus one gets a triple dose of
cholesterol.

"The Late Unpleasantness" is, of course, not the only
expression for that event. In some parts of the South it is called simply
"The Waah." [That is the best spelling I can provide for the expression.
To some contemporaries and even later historians it was known as "The War
for Southern Independence."
