COPYRIGHT, PRIVACY, AND ACCESS WORKSHOP
RADISSON HOTEL MEMPHIS
APRIL 13 - 15, 2000

COPYRIGHT, PRIVACY, AND ACCESS WORKSHOP
8:00 - 12:00 Copyright Issues for Archivists
Fair use? Public domain? Bundle of rights? Infringement? *Work made for hire*? Sonny Bono? Harmonization? Shrink wrap licenses? What in the world does it all mean?! All of these terms, and much more, are part of the legal environment surrounding U.S. copyright law. This workshop will help map the terrain surrounding copyright through a combination of lecture and exercises/discussion. Participants will gain a clearer understanding of what copyright law means for archivists (and other information professionals), including the recent changes in U.S. law and where technology may be leading us.
12:00 - 1:30 Lunch on Your Own
1:30 - 5:30 Privacy, Confidentiality, and Access Issues for Archivists
This workshop considers the history and development of privacy concepts and law in America, a brief discussion of confidentiality, and ethical concerns. Following the lecture portion, participants will discuss a case study that incorporates these challenging topics and other issues in a *more than real life* setting. There will be plenty of time for discussion, trading viewpoints, and questions. Participants will gain a greater understanding of the issues surrounding these topics and a framework to help analyze them.
