REFERENCE ARCHIVIST

Presbyterian Historical Society

Presbyterian Church (U. S. A.)

Responsibilities: The reference archivist provides historical, legal, and administrative information services to the agencies, middle governing bodies, and congregations of the PC(USA), scholars, and the general public. Provides advice and training to church constituencies on historical and records issues, through workshops, exhibits, newsletter articles, and handouts. Trains and supervises part-time and temporary staff. Reports to the Manager of Public Services and Outreach in Philadelphia.  Minimum Qualifications: Masters in library science with significant coursework in archival administration or Masters in archival management. Certified Archivist preferred. Three to five years of archival experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to shift 40 lb boxes. Desired Qualifications: Knowledge of computer applications in archives. Skill in communication (both written and verbal), teaching and public speaking, and creative problem solving. Salary: Starting salary range $37,000-40,000 with generous benefits and moving expenses. About the Presbyterian Historical Society: The PHS is the national archives and historical research center of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Headquartered in Philadelphia, with a regional office in Montreat, NC, and a records management program at the denomination’s headquarters in Louisville, KY, it serves the administrative, legal, and historical needs of the church’s national agencies, middle governing bodies, and local congregations as well as scholars and the general public. The PHS-Philadelphia houses c. 15,000 cu ft of the official records of the denomination and its predecessor denominations; personal papers of prominent Presbyterians; the records of ecumenical organizations such as the American Sunday School Union and the National Council of the Churches of Christ; c. 180,000 monographs, serials, and rare books supporting research in Presbyterian history; and a museum collection of c. 5000 items.
