Re: job market

So, Jill, what you're basically pointing out is that it's tough to find the
right fit between employee and employer.

This isn't a great surprise to me. The fact is, sometimes you have to dig a
little to get the right match. I've said before that the responsibility of
getting people into a job demands something from both seeker and employer. Too
many job postings come across to me as the employer is looking for an
unreasonable combination of skills to go with a low salary. Many postings I've
seen demand the web skills of a full time designer with the ability to lift a
hundred and fifty pounds with your little toe. And all that for 30 grand in
NYC.

There has to be some compromise between getting a well-qualified individual and
not expecting them to be Superman/Woman. I still feel (as I always have) that
many employers don't really know what their new-found employees should actually
be doing. I admit as well that many new employees don't have what it takes to
do the jobs they're being asked to do - at first. I think a little patience
with a new employee leads to unexpected benefits. Less hardened veterans are
(potentially) willing to experiment with new approaches that lead to exciting
developments, and if you're willing to teach somebody what you need, you may be
surprised what they can accomplish.

Can't we all just get along? :)

Daniel
