2000 Rentschler Lecture Broadcast

"Historic Sites as Public Forums: The National Park Service as an
Educational Institution"

Dr. Dwight Pitcaithley will explore the changing role of the National Park
Service in today's society, as it reflects both Congressional intent and an
expanded concept of collective memory. He will discuss the history of
historic sites as educational institutions and the evolving nature of the
preservation and interpretation of our most cherished national places. His
lecture will examine the role of history in a democratic society and the
necessary and inherent relationship between public places and historical
scholarship.

Dr. Pitcaithley's lecture will be held Thursday, April 13, 2000 at 4:00 pm,
in the Stock Grower's Room of the American Heritage Center. The lecture by
Dr. Pitcaithley will also be broadcast over the World Wide Web.
