Job Announcement:
Deputy Director for Education and Public Programs


The Maryland Historical Society, the state?s oldest cultural institution, is
seeking a Deputy Director for Education and Public Programs to implement the
interpretive goals of this dynamic statewide institution during a period of
expansion. The Maryland Historical Society museum collection is the largest of
any in the state, and its library maintains the largest collection of
documentation on the history of Maryland and its people. The exhibitions and
educational programs reach an audience of over 134,000 children and adults each
year. This position directs education staff in researching, planning,
developing, implementing, and evaluating both on and off-site programs,
including a nationally recognized school outreach program, which have over 80,
000 participants annually.  The Deputy Director has budgetary and supervisory
responsibilities for the education division, which includes a 10-member staff of
full and part-time employees. The Deputy Director of Education is also closely
involved in all interpretive components of the Society, including exhibitions
and publications, as well as developing and coordinating educational activities
with the Library.  This position serves as the Society?s primary audience
advocate. Visionary leadership is necessary for assuring the overall quality,
uniformity and innovative nature of programs within a team atmosphere.  The
successful candidate will have 5-10 years of supervisory experience in the
education department of a similar institution and an advanced degree in museum
education, history, American studies, or related field.  Demonstrated experience
in program evaluation, grant writing, supervising professional staff,
administration, strategic planning, and knowledge of material culture, museum
and educational philosophy and theory preferred.  In addition, the successful
candidate will have team-building skills, and excellent writing and public
speaking abilities.  Computer skills, Windows environment preferred.  Submit a
