Re: Vision Statement

Here, for what it's worth, is ours:

Statement of the Mission, Purpose, and Value of Historical Collections
Health Sciences Library
SUNY Upstate Medical University

To create, maintain, and preserve a broadly based historical record of
SUNY Upstate Medical University, its precursor institutions, and the
individuals associated with them, in order to develop a primary resource
for scholars of the history, biography, genealogy, and sociology of
medicine in Central New York.

To educate the public about the rich legacy of SUNY Upstate Medical
University in the history of medicine, e.g., its graduation in 1849 of
Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman M.D. of modern times, and to
publicize the history of SUNY Upstate Medical University and the
historical collections of its Library, in order to add to this
institution?s prestige among scholars and medical professionals.

To create favorable publicity for SUNY Upstate Medical University by
preparing exhibits both on- and off-campus, by sponsoring and arranging
lectures and other events around historical themes, by writing and
publishing on historical themes, by using historical information to
spotlight achievements, and by collaborating with the Alumni Office,
various other information offices, various academic, research, and
clinical departments, and various off-campus agencies, e.g., newspapers,
government agencies, medical societies, etc., to bring historical and
biographical information about SUNY Upstate Medical University and its
people to the public; all in order to generate good will toward SUNY
Upstate Medical University among the alumni and within the community at
large.

To provide and protect a non-circulating collection of rare books,
journals, manuscripts, and other original materials which pertain
specifically to the history of medicine in Central New York, and
especially to Geneva Medical College, adequate for graduate and
post-graduate level research.

To provide both a circulating collection and a non-circulating reference
collection in the general history of medicine, open to the public and
adequate for basic research.

To encourage and assist scholars to write and publish about the history
of medicine in Central New York, and to provide adequate and comfortable
facilities for them to do their work in the Library.

To collect, organize, catalog, protect, and preserve the Archives (i.e.,
internal documents) of SUNY Upstate Medical University so that a primary
record of its history may exist for future generations.

To advocate the use of historical materials in researching current
issues in the medical humanities and to act as a liaison to health care
workers, librarians, other colleagues, and the local community, in order
to foster and promote interest in the medical humanities, such as
medical ethics.

To preserve, organize, catalog, and make available the photographic
archives of SUNY Upstate Medical University and the negatives produced
by its Medical Photography Unit.

To educate Library users and staff about the need to conserve and
preserve original physical evidence in the history of medicine,
including books, manuscripts, photographs, instruments, and museum
pieces, and establish high standards of conservation and preservation
throughout the Health Sciences Library.
