The Library Administration and Management Association (LAMA), Systems and
Services Section will offer a one-day workshop on project management prior
to the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago. This is a topic of high interest
to library managers and team members facing large projects such as moving a
library, building a new facility, implementing the next generation local
library system, re-organizing staff and/or floor plans and/or collections,
etc.
"Successful Project Management: Tools for Survival" offers an introduction
to the skills and tools available through a project management approach.
Participants will gain an understanding of the theory and concepts of
project management and its impact on organizations; learn techniques and
specific tools that can be used and the pros and cons of each; and find out
what it is like to manage a project using project management applications.
The preconference presents three speakers plus a case study practicum.
Pat Wagner, library consultant, presents theory and concepts of project
management. Kathryn J. Deiss, ARL/OMS Program Officer for Training, offers
an overview of project management tools and applications. W. David
Penniman, library consultant, talks about the mechanics of bringing a
project to fruition. The case study practicum follows the speakers'
presentations.
This workshop will be held on Friday, July 7, 8:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M.
Registration fees are $145 for LAMA members; $195 for ALA members; and $245
for non-ALA members. The registration deadline is June 7.
To register by mail, send a completed registration form with payment to ALA
