Digital Archivist Position - Please post.



POSITION: DIGITAL ARCHIVIST

History Associates Incorporated, an archives, records management, and
historical research firm
located in Rockville, Maryland, is seeking an archivist with experience in
the digitization of
archival records and the creation of metadata to facilitate researcher
access to digitized records.
The archivist will work with a team of archivists and historians on a
long-term project processing
and digitizing documents from the papers of Nobel Laureates and other
manuscript collections.

The successful candidate shall provide a range of archival tasks in the
digitization of the
documents. Primary duties include creating metadata records for documents
selected for scanning;
conducting quality assurance reviews of metadata and scanned images;
reviewing scanned
documents for sensitivity and copyright clearance concerns; providing
insight and feedback on
database and Web site design; and handling original documents as part of
the project workflow.
The digital archivist will need to be a strong verbal and written
communicator, able to work as
part of a team, a creative problem solver, and an initiator of new ideas
and feedback.

Secondary duties include HTML and EAD coding, Web design, appraisal of
materials for
digitization; contributing to the writing of scripts and narratives for
online and physical exhibits;
working with  students and archives technician on scanning; and reviewing
final products.  Works
on other projects and tasks as assigned.

The work will be carried out onsite in the History of Medicine Division of
the National Library of
Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland.  The hours to be worked shall be between
9:00 A.M. and 5:30
P.M., Monday through Friday, excluding federal holidays.

Qualifications
Master's degree in library science with a concentration in archives
management; one to two years
experience working with archival collections involving scanning and
digitization of documents;
knowledge of metadata standards; and the ability to create item-level
metadata entries.
Experience with science and medicine based collections is a plus.

Salary: $30,000 per year.  Excellent benefits package.
