Digital signature -- technically isn't that a bit much, since we currently
use our fingers (= digits) to physically sign something does this mean we
already using "digital signatures"? Well onto things RIM

Once again a group of newspapers is exploring FOIA compliance by a state.
this time it is Minnesota's turn. So far the only articles that I can find
on it are in the Grand Forks Herald, but I will check the Star-Tribune
tonight.

Grand Forks Herald (ND) 4/17/00
Your rights in northwestern Minnesota

by James Walsh and Nancy Conner
Society of Professional Journalists
Officials at nearly 60 percent of Minnesota's jails have broken the law in
the past few weeks. They refused to let the public look at the names of the
people they lock behind bars.
They weren't alone.

Grand Forks Herald 4/18/00
Editorial: Compliance with information law isn't optional
Local governments should be chagrined about their performance on the recent
Freedom of Information audit

Tom Dennis
When suspects say they didn't know that what they did was a crime, sheriffs
in Minnesota (and everywhere else) respond, "Ignorance is no excuse."
When suspects say they couldn't follow the law because to do so would have
been embarrassing, the sheriffs might say, "Inconvenience is no excuse." And
when suspects claim they know better than state Legislature does about
what's in Minnesota's interests, sheriffs could respond, "Arrogance is no
excuse."

OK, OK here is the article dealing with plumbing
New Scientist 4/15/00
Plumbing the depths
After DVDs, data storage is set to enter a new dimension
http://www.newscientist.com/news/news_223425.html

by Barry Fox
Holograms will be storing movies, pictures, sound and computer data much
sooner than anyone thought, according to Imation, a company based in
Oakdale, Minnesota, which specialises in optical storage systems. Imation
says it can combine several cheap off-the-shelf technologies to make a disc
recording system that will store six times as much data as a DVD.

Tangential article related to our esteemed lists, but I always love it when
an interviewee is identified as an archivist or records manager in the
newspapers. Besides I'm the one picking the articles.

Washington -- With the flourish of a quill spelling out ''John Hancock'' or
with a simple pencil scratching out an ''X,'' Americans have long used their

never reach its full potential unless two parties can complete a contract by
using a computer to ''sign'' and send legally binding documents.
