Interesting Facts About Retirement

The acronym for Life Expectancy Post Retirement (LEPR
-- pronounced Leaper) inspired the ?Leaping LEPR
Program? which, in conjunction with the National
Association of Geriatric Field Athletes, encourages
retired persons to practice high jumping.

There are more retired persons in the United States
today than were there were working
persons just 30 years ago.

The life expectancy of retired persons has increased
dramatically from 3.7 years in 1947 to 21.2 years in
1998, the last year for which full statistics exist.

Retires persons who stay busy live over 30 years, post
retirement.  Retired persons who describe themselves
as ?bored? live just 7.3 years.

Retired persons living in Mississippi, Arkansas and
Alabama average the longest LEPR at 41.7 years.

Retired persons living in New Hampshire, Vermont and
Maine average the shortest LEPR -- 3.3 years.

Persons who retire past 70 usually live longer than
persons who retire in their mid 50s.

41% of retired persons describe their lives as ?good?
or ?excellent.?  32% as ?poor? and the remaining 27%
as ?unsure? or ?uncertain.?

Retired persons write 87% of letters to the editor,
73% of letters to Congress, 71% of letters to the
White House and 64% of letters to businesses &
organizations.

The National Whittling Congress reports that 75% of
its members are retired.

29% of retired persons have a least three bumper
stickers on their car.  43% have at least one.

A retired person is 42% more likely to fall asleep at
a meal than a non-retired person.

68% of all retired persons have dentures.

37% of retired persons die in public places.

Retired persons who relocate upon retirement are 78%
more likely to experience psychotic episodes within
six months than those who do not relocate.
