Re: Vietnam Collections

May 5, 2000

Dear List Servees:

The Edmund S. Muskie Archives at Bates College, Lewiston, Maine, has a
substantial amount of material on the Vietnam conflict, both in the Senate
Office series of the Muskie collection and in the records of Muskie's 1972
presidential campaign organization.

The files contain constituent correspondence (including a 1967 letter from
my mother, who unbeknownst to me at the time wrote Muskie right after I
enlisted in the Marines) and the senator's replies, correspondence with
fellow officeholders (including Pres. Johnson), "resource" material
collected by the Senate staff, the files of William A.K. (Tony) Lake, who
was Muskie's 1972 campaign foreign policy advisor, and speeches and other
public statements.

A number of Bates students have used the materials, which provide great
insight into the way the war played out in the Senate and at the
grassroots level. They also document Muskie's evolution from a steadfast
defender of Johnson's policy of intervention to proponent of rapid
withdrawal, and critic of Nixon's actions, after 1968.

Anyone interested in investigating this rich and voluminous cache is
invited to contact the Muskie Archives.

Sincerely,

Christopher M. Beam
