The National Library of Medicine Digital Manuscripts Program announces that materials from the papers of Nobel laureate Dr. Julius Axelrod have been digitized and added to its "Profiles in Science" website (http://www.profiles.nlm.nih.gov). Dr. Axelrod (b. 1912) is an American pharmacologist and neuroscientist who shared the 1970 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discovery of the actions of neurotransmitters in regulating the metabolism of the nervous system.

This new online collection features a variety of documents selected from Axelrod's papers, which are held at the National Library of Medicine (http://www.nlm.nih.gov). The materials span the various phases of Axelrod's life and career and include an unpublished manuscript from 1994, personal and professional-life photographs, a large sampling of his most important published articles, and pages from his extensive collection of laboratory notebooks showing his early experiments with caffeine and LSD.

Axelrod is the fourth scientist to be added to "Profiles in Science," dedicated to providing access to the papers of prominent 20th century biomedical scientists. He joins Oswald T. Avery, Joshua Lederberg, and Martin Rodbell on the website. "Profiles in Science" was launched in September 1998 by the National Library of Medicine, a part of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. It is a continuing project and the Library plans to add new collections to the site.

We hope you enjoy the site. Please direct any questions or comments about "Profiles in Science" to the project staff at profiles@nlm.nih.gov.
