Re: Murals: ART ARCHIVISTS AND OTHERS WHO MAY BE INTERESTED

When Cheshire County Savings Bank,in Keene, NH, was bought out and its main
office was to be closed, the Historical Society of Cheshire County saved a
wall mural by Barry Faulkner, relocating it to the society's new
headquarters. You might want to get in touch with Director Alan Rumrill at
the society, 246 Main St. PO Box 803, Keene, NH 03431 (603-352-1895). They
don't have an e-mail listing.

Dear Veronica & Ronnie C:

Before getting too deep into preservation efforts, has anyone at your
institution given long-term and budgetary consideration about preserving
the
murals; photographing them as-is, etc.?

Why waste precious monies/labor if there is no preservation plan in
place?

Conserving these sounds like a huge effort given their location and the
poor
track record (saw horses, etc.) of care they've received 'til now. And
what
a shame that no one appears to love them enough! WPA and WWII murals are
precious and rare enough. As female war worker cultural icons, they
should
be granted some serious attention before it's too late.

Perhaps, after they're photographed, they could be moved -- prior to
conservation/restoration -- to a more visible, respectable site? Again,
if
they're invisible to the public and caring staff, money would be wasted
in
trying to turn neglect and damage around.

That's my 2 cents worth...

Best of luck!
