Re: odors coming from Audio and video collections

Rob - it's got to be your materials, and my suspicion it's your video,
rather than audio, materials, especially if they are older. I have a fair
number of aerial photographs in my collection, dating from the 40s & 50s -
whenever I open a box of them that has been closed up for awhile, it smells
like old cat pee - el stinko!! Sorry, though, I don't have any solutions -
the photos don't seem to be suffering any, so I just breathe very lightly
whenever I need to work with them. good luck - ttfn - Jill.

Dear Listservers,

My question today concerns a rather peculiar odor that i have in one of my
storage rooms. Initially because of the rooms proximity to the pool here
at the college it was thought that the odor was of cholrine, however, that
now appears not to be the case. This room contains both my audio and video
collections and a large collection of artifacts of various shapes sizes and
materials. My theory is that what ever is producing the odor would need to
be a large source as the room is large. So i am wondering if my video and
audio collections arent off gasing. Has anyone else had a similiar
situation or have experienced odors in their AV storage areas. Any
thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks
