POSITION AVAILABLE:  U.S. Newspaper Cataloger

POSITION PURPOSE:
To survey, inventory, and catalog newspapers for the Illinois Newspaper
Project under the auspices of the United States Newspaper Project.
The USNP cataloger is part of a two-person team on a longstanding
project funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities.  The
team has an office at the Chicago Historical Society but will travel to
repositories of newspapers at many different locations throughout the
7-county Chicago metropolitan area in order to inventory and catalog
newspaper holdings.

PRINCIPAL PERFORMANCE GOALS, 1997-2002:
Sustain and enhance CHS's role as a premier research institution by
supporting the completion of the surveying and cataloging phases of
the Illinois Newspaper Project.

POSITION DUTIES:
Identify and survey holdings of United States  newspapers in
Chicago-area libraries, other repositories, and a few publishers' offices.
Survey and examine original and microfilm newspaper files in the
Chicago area.
Analyze and record physical condition information on newspaper
holdings surveyed.
Produce original and, when appropriate, enhanced cataloging in OCLC
according to AACR2, the Newspaper Cataloging Manual (CONSER/USNP
edition), and the CONSER Cataloging Manual.
Create Local Data Records in OCLC for holdings located in the course
of the project.
Maintain local print and microcomputer-based records supplementing
OCLC cataloging and holdings information.  This includes a database in MS
Access.
Participate in the development of procedures and strategies employed in the
newspaper project.
Advise the Head of CHS's Accessioning and Cataloging Group in developing
goals, objectives, and proposals for continued funding for the project.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

MLS from an ALA-accredited library school, including course work in
cataloging,
and previous serials experience;

Working knowledge of OCLC, familiarity with AACR2, LC Subject Headings,
MARC format for serials;

Experience with Microsoft Access or a comparable database software program;

Experience working in a library with responsibility for serials cataloging
and/or
serials control;

Accurate and fast keyboard skills for word processing and data entry;

Adaptability; ability to work independently and to work cooperatively with
colleagues

Willingness to travel within the 7-county metropolitan area in order to
conduct
project field work

Driver's license valid in Illinois

Ability to lift 40 pounds and to work with collections that are sometimes
dusty or moldy

Ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing

Ability to perform very detailed work accurately and consistently

Ability and patience to work with fragile Library materials.
