Deborah, with respect to your concerns about material that be considered
racially objectionable, you may want to take a look at

to see how they've handled the issue--it includes a warning that readers are
advised to remember that older material has a different social context from
today's.  The accompanying essay that addresses chronological context is most
interesting.
