THE HUNTINGTON LIBRARY, ART COLLECTIONS AND BOTANICAL GARDENS

The Huntington Library invites applications and nominations for three professional positions. Located about 15 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles, the Huntington was created in 1919 as an independent private library for advanced scholarly research in English and American history and literature, combined with public art galleries and botanical gardens. Other areas of strength are 15th-century books, the history of science and technology, and the history of books and printing. The Library collections, comprising 385,000 rare books, 4 million manuscripts, and large collections of historical prints, photographs and ephemera, are consulted annually by nearly 1,800 scholars from around the world.     

PRINCIPAL RARE BOOK CATALOGER 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Manages the Rare Book Cataloging Unit within the Technical Services Department; supervises a staff of 2 FTE and several grant-funded catalogers. Has primary responsibility for formulating and documenting cataloging policies and procedures for rare printed materials; works with Acquisitions Librarian and curators to set priorities and manage backlog of uncataloged materials. Prepares catalog records in accordance with national standards and local and network policies. Collaborates with curatorial staff to create and maintain library-wide policies for description of and access to rare materials in all formats. Participates in the management of the Technical Services Department and presides over regular catalogers' meetings.  The successful candidate will be expected to take a leading role in planning and managing grant-funded projects. Reports to the head of Technical Services.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Required: ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent. 3-5 years professional experience in an academic or research library; 2-3 years special collections cataloging experience. Familiarity with rare book and archival cataloging standards, including thorough knowledge of MARC, AACR2, LCSH, DCRB, and special thesauri. Experience with an integrated library system and a bibliographic utility (Innopac and RLIN preferred). Knowledge of the principles of bibliographic description and the characteristics of early printed books. Preferred: Management and/or supervisory experience. Demonstrated knowledge of current developments in the field; experience with microcomputer applications (e.g. wordprocessing and database). Working knowledge of at least one modern European and one classical language. Minimum of salary range: $36,750.

SYSTEMS LIBRARIAN

RESPONSIBILITIES: 
Works with all departments of the Library to plan, develop, and coordinate systems activities: to integrate and standardize intellectual access to the Library's collections; to automate Library operations in the most efficient manner; and to organize access to electronic resources for staff and readers. Determines functional requirements; analyzes and recommends improvements in the application of electronic information technology; oversees installation and maintenance of computer hardware, software, and peripherals; acts as Library's liaison to institutional systems office. Designs and maintains user interfaces, including the Library's web pages; manages integrated library system (Innopac); coordinates use of bibliographic utility (RLIN). Manages technical support for digital projects and local databases. Trains staff and readers in the use of electronic resources; creates documentation. Participates in writing grant proposals; planning and managing special projects. Member of the executive administrative team; reports to Director of the Library. 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Required: ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent; 3-5 years technical services or systems experience in an academic or research setting. Demonstrated knowledge of library content and information technology standards and the functions of library automated systems. Familiarity with  metadata standards, digital libraries, and microcomputer applications. Experience in the creation and management of digital information; website development; software development/customization in a networked environment. Excellent communication skills. Preferred: Experience with Innopac and RLIN. Knowledge of licensing and patron access issues; archiving and preservation of digital information; CD-ROM technology; HTML, SGML, and EAD. Management experience, including planning, budgeting, supervision, and policy creation. Familiarity with library practices with regard to primary research materials. Minimum of salary range: $46,900.

CATALOG LIBRARIAN/DATABASE MANAGER

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Responsible for maintenance and quality control of the Library's bibliographic database. This applies to both current cataloging and to post-conversion cleanup; the Library is engaged in retrospective conversion of its printed books catalog, with completion scheduled for early 2001. Works with catalogers and curators to implement authority control; in this capacity acts as liaison with other institutions and vendors. May create bibliographic and authority records as needed.  Formulates and documents policies and procedures; compiles statistics and creates reports; may train or supervise clerical staff in the performance of specific projects. Reports to Chief Catalog Librarian. This is a 2-year, grant-sponsored position, with possibility of renewal.          

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Required: ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent. Demonstrated knowledge of current national cataloging standards, such as AACR2, LC classification, LC subject headings, the MARC format, and principles and procedures of authority control. Experience with an integrated library system and a bibliographic utility (Innopac and RLIN preferred). Preferred: 2-3 years technical services experience in an academic or research library. Working knowledge of at least one modern European language. Minimum of  salary range: $32,840.
