cataloging editorial cartoons

greetings all--
the staff at the modern political collections division of the south
caroliniana library at usc in columbia, s.c., are currently in the process
of designing an in-house database to provide access to editorial cartoons
and photographs within our collections. once the system is implemented,
staff members will then create a batch of catalog records to test the system.
i pose these questions to list members: for those institutions who have
undertaken similar projects, what systems (Minaret, Access, etc) did you
settle on and why? what tools (LCSH, ArtMARC) did your institution utilize
when creating catalog records? i've conducted searches for articles
adressing the topic of cataloging special materials with limited success. any
suggestions? much thanks in advance.
