School board memeber races state action for taking student file

by Lisa Goodnight
EAST RUTHERFORD -- It's usually a big no-no. But a local school board member
will try to convince the state Department of Education that he shouldn't get
into major trouble for taking an inactive student file.
James Janakat, 23, said Thursday that he's not sure when he'll plead his
case or what to expect.
"I have no idea what is likely to happen. . . . I would prefer to keep my
board position," said Janakat, who was elected to the East Rutherford Board
of Education more than a year ago. "All I can do is present the facts and
the [state] commissioner [of education] will have to make a decision based
on that. I sincerely meant no harm."

Bank statements, court documents, accident reports, school files and other
papers in Liberty County for years have been stored in whatever space
workers could find available.
County records coordinator Winston Walker has found them tucked in closets,
filed away at a former Georgia Department of Labor building and stored as
far away as Georgia Southern University in Statesboro.
In a few weeks, Walker hopes to see all the records under one roof on the
shelves of Liberty County's Records Center -- the former Hinesville post
office on Memorial Drive.

To Danny Thau and his colleague David Burns, it seemed like a fruitful
avenue of inquiry: What would have happened to the planet if Ike hadn't
launched D-Day exactly when he did--56 years ago today?
First they called the Dwight D. Eisenhower Library in Kansas and got hold of
rarely seen letters in which Eisenhower takes sole responsibility for the
invasion of Europe. Then they went to the National Archives and other
libraries to dig through documents, logged onto the Internet and tracked
down veterans.
