APOLOGIES FOR CROSS POSTINGS PRESS RELEASE Information for Accountability Workshop: Proceedings Now Available The Proceedings of the first Information for Accountability Workshop are now available on the IRMT website at http://www.irmt.org/resources/tanpro.pdf . The two-day workshop to discuss the issue of improving access to information took place in Tanzania in March 2000. The workshop’s goal was to encourage the formation of an informed civil society. Once equipped with information, individual citizens and their representatives can assert their civil rights, hold governments accountable, and help to detect and deter corruption and fraud. Key issues and obstacles to accessing government information were highlighted by workshop participants and a number of recommendations were made. The focus was on developing a practical action programme to meet both short-term and longer-term objectives. The District Based Support for Primary Education programme provided a focus for the workshop and ways forward for the programme regarding providing information to the public were highlighted. In addition actions with a wider goal of improving access to information across government were also discussed. This workshop initiative will be carried forward by a second workshop in Ghana in August 2000. The focus of this will be the issues surrounding the implementation of Freedom of Information legislation in Ghana. More information about the workshops can be found on our website at www.irmt.org A press pack containing more information about the work of the Rights and Records Institute and the International Records Management Trust is also available on request.
