I always assumed embarrassment was the primary motivation for concealing the
salary range.
I remember seeing a listing for an archives position in New York City. One
of the qualifications was "a good sense of humor." When I read the salary
figure, I suddenly knew why humor was required...

There have been times, when I have perused these notices, that I have
thought the posters were keeping the salary "secret" because they were
embarrassed about it. Then again, sometimes you hope that the ones that
HAVE posted the salary are embarrassed....
