The story I heard was they wanted the actor to play the part so bad that
they lived with the lie. He offered to try batting left handed but the swing
didn't look natural enough so...

One of the worst things Hollywood ever did to "history" was turn Shoeless
Joe Jackson [arguably the purest left-handed swing in baseball history] into
a right-handed batter.  This actually happened in the Field of Dreams and I
often wondered how Kinsella could have let this happen.
