Position Announcement



Yale University's Manuscripts and Archives department is looking for an
Archivist to participate on the Archives 300 project, a project geared
toward rejuvenating Yale's archival programs and collections in anticipation
of the university's 300th anniversary. This will be an excellent opportunity
for someone relatively new to the archival profession to gain experience in
all aspects of archival collection development and processing as well as
records management program implementation.

THIS IS A FIXED DURATION POSITION WITH AN END DATE OF JUNE 30, 2002

THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY

The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching and
research at the University, has more than 10 million volumes housed in the
Sterling Memorial Library and over 20 school and department libraries and
two low-use shelving facilities. It employs a dynamic and innovative staff
of nearly 600 FTE who have the opportunity to work with the highest caliber
of faculty and students, participate on committees and are involved in other
areas of staff development. A full spectrum of library resources, from rare
books and manuscripts to a rapidly expanding network of electronic
resources, constitutes one of Yale's distinctive strengths. The Library is
engaged in numerous ambitious projects such as the renovation of the main
library building, the complete conversion of the Library's catalog, and
various automation projects, which include network access to scholarly
information and digital preservation.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the supervision of the Assistant University Archivist of Manuscripts
and Archives the successful candidate have the following responsibilities:

1. Examines administrative files relating to the provenance of archival
materials, reviews pertinent historical literature, analyzes materials to
determine content and the appropriate level and type of arrangement and
description needed, and develops plans for accomplishing the work, including
estimates of resources needed.
2. Responsible for arrangement and description of archival material in
accordance with approved plans; trains and supervises available support
staff and student assistants; screens for potentially sensitive material;
weeds extraneous material; recommends appropriate preservation and
conservation procedures; and coordinates the copying or reformatting of
materials for preservation and access.
3. Prepares an inventory, register, or other finding aid for processed
materials, including an administrative history or historical note; scope and
content note; and appropriate listing of materials.
4. Prepares or updates catalog and holdings records for archival materials
and Yale publications in accordance with archival and library standards for
entry into the RLIN/AMC and local databases.
5. Assists in records surveys, development and negotiation of record
retention and disposition schedules, and the packing and transport of
materials from offices and donors.
6. Reappraises records currently held in the Archives.
7. Participates in the formulation of unit and departmental policy and
procedures by assembling information and drafting policy and procedure
memoranda, and by making recommendations on proposed policies and
procedures.
8. Assists in the development and maintenance of archives-related web
offerings, brochures, and other publications.
9. Makes recommendations on personnel selection, staffing requirements, and
equipment and supply needs.
10. Will continue to be active in the profession.

QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED:
1. Masters degree in history or related discipline and/or an A.L.A.
accredited M.L.S. degree.
2. Formal archival training or education and/or demonstrated knowledge of
archival theory and practice.
3. Familiarity with automated archival or bibliographic information systems
and descriptive standards for archival materials.

PREFERRED:
4. Education or experience in the management of graphic, moving image, audio
or artifactual materials.
5. Records management education or experience.
6. One to two years of archival processing experience.
7. Education or experience in the creation and maintenance of bibliographic
and holdings records for publications.
8. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in
writing.
9. Ability to work effectively in a team setting with administrative,
professional, and support staff.
10. Ability to lift materials and push heavy book trucks on a frequent
basis.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Competitive salary and rank, based upon the successful candidate's
