POSITION TITLE
Archivist

STARTING SALARY
Range 22, $2,565 per month; $30,780 annual

LOCATION
St. Louis

DEPARTMENT/DIVISION
Local Records Preservation Program

General Responsibilities:

This position provides direct program assistance to Missouri local
governments and especially includes the development of large urban
collections.  These services establish procedures for improvements in
managing records of historical and permanent value and advising clients in
records management practices.  These efforts are directed toward the
efficient use of space and the destruction of records beyond retention.  The
archivist advises on the use of proper equipment and supplies in creating,
maintaining, storing and servicing public records.

The archivist creates comprehensive records inventories, prepares finding
aids and indexes, performs basic conservation treatments in the field, and
refers documents of enduring historical value to the program conservator.
The position coordinates volunteer and occasional student interns who work
in local officials' offices.  The archivist advises clients for compliance
in rules and guidelines in the programs grant projects.   The position
directs problematic record retention issues through the director to the
Local Records Board.

Skills:

Applicant must have strong verbal and written skills and be able to use a
laptop computer.  This includes typing 30 words per minute and accessing
electronic records (files and databases) in Microsoft Office and be willing
to take additional training workshops.  Must be able to drive statewide for
day trips, engage a modest amount of overnight travel up to one week at a
time in a personal vehicle, and deliver public programs and workshops for
government and public audiences.  Must be able to consult on records
projects over the telephone and to communicate extensively by e-mail.

Qualifications:

This position requires a master's degree in American history, library
science (with an archival component), or ten or more years experience in the
above fields.  Certified Archivist designation or the commitment to obtain
such is strongly preferred.  Applicant should have a general knowledge on
how to appraise historical records and knowledge of quality control in
electronic imaging and micrographics production.  Must be able to lift and
carry a forty-pound box, climb a ladder to retrieve materials, and work in
varied environmental conditions that contain dust, mold and dampness.  A
valid Missouri driver's license is required.


Posting Period: Position posted July 5, 2000 for a minimum posting period of
5 days.  The minimum posting period will end:  July 12, 2000.  After the
minimum posting period, the position may be closed to new applicants and
filled at any time.
