Position Announcement (Supervisory Archivist), History Associates



History Associates Incorporated, an archives, records management, and
historical research firm located in Rockville Maryland, is seeking an
experienced archivist for the processing and digitization of the
papers of a Nobel Laureate.

The successful candidate shall provide a range of archival tasks in
the survey, appraisal, arrangement, description, and digitization of
the papers of a Nobel Laureate. Primary duties shall include
maintaining regular relations with the donor relative to the donation
of his papers; conducting surveys and appraising the donor's records;
arranging for the transport and receipt of the donor's records;
establishing an archival arrangement of the donor's papers; describing
the donor's papers by means of an archival finding aid and by
electronic databases developed by the Digital Manuscript Project;
serving as a liaison between the donor and other Digital Manuscript
Project staff on issues of arrangement, description, and digitization
of the donor's papers; coordinating the procuring of permission for
web publishing of documents in the donor's papers; and reviewing
documents prepared for web publication, especially for issues of
privacy and sensitivity. Assists with other projects and tasks as assigned.

The archivist will carry out work onsite in the Modern Manuscripts
unit of the History of Medicine Division of the National Library of
Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland. The hours to be worked shall be
between 8:30 A.M. and 5:00 P.M., Monday through Friday, excluding
federal holidays.

Qualifications

Master's degree in library science with a concentration in archives
managmen; ten years experience working with large contemporary
collections; ability to collect, organize, research, interpret, and
submit written descriptions of record groups and collections; ability
to work harmoniously and effectively with others and to communicate
archival benefits and functions to laymen; ability to identify
problems and present and implement recommendations for their solution;
ability to work independently and to exercise discretion, initiative,
and judgement

Preferred qualifications include experience with science and medicine
based collections; working with donors; and managerial and supervisory
experience.

Salary: high 30s to the mid 40s, commensuarate with experience.
