Re: perpetual calendar

Deborah raises a good question. Some years ago, I got exasperated with
existing perpetual calendars, which always assume you know the year. So
I took the information from the World Book Encyclopedia's perpetual
calendar (under "Calendar") and rearranged it so it could be used in
reverse. It's been handy. I only included the years 1820 to 2000 due to
the materials I was working with at the time, but it could easily be
expanded.
Here it is--paste it into your word processing program, and replace
every occurrence of == (two equal signs) with a tab, and it should form
itself back into columns. (If anyone has trouble with this procedure,
e-mail me at nlhadl@mail.wm.edu and I'll be happy to send it to you as
an attachment in WordPerfect or Word.)

Reverse Perpetual Calendar

Say you have a date of Tuesday, March 14, and you want to know what year
it might have been. First, find the 14th in Chart A. Read horizontally
until you come to Tuesday. Read up the column to discover that if the
14th was Tuesday then the first day of the month fell on Wednesday.

Chart A
1==8==15==22==29==SUN==MON==TUE==WED==THU==FRI==SAT
2==9==16==23==30==Mon==Tue==Wed==Thu==Fri==Sat==Sun
3==10==17==24==31==Tue==Wed==Thu==Fri==Sat==Sun==Mon
4==11==18==25====Wed==Thu==Fri==Sat==Sun==Mon==Tue
5==12==19==26====Thu==Fri==Sat==Sun==Mon==Tue==Wed
6==13==20==27====Fri==Sat==Sun==Mon==Tue==Wed==Thu
7==14==21==28====Sat==Sun==Mon==Tue==Wed==Thu==Fri

Now use Chart B to determine that March begins on Wednesday in year
groups 1 and 8.

Chart B

==SUN==MON==TUE==WED==THU==FRI==SAT
Jan==1, 9==2, 10==3, 11==4, 12==5, 13==6, 14==7, 8
Feb==5, 13==6, 14==7, 8==1, 9==2, 10==3, 11==4, 12

Jun==4, 11==5, 12==6, 13==7, 14==1, 8==2, 9==3, 10

Dec==3, 10==4, 11==5, 12==5, 13==7, 14==1, 8==2, 9

Finally, use Chart C to see the possible years in groups 1 and 8.
