Re: New Yorker (hopelessly defensive...)

Didn't expect to be back on this thread and I *do* want to read the entire
article but, in response to Thomas Heard:

1)In major preservation microfilming programs that are performed to ANSI
and RLG standards, the film is checked for quality of the film, and for
completeness of the film which, time consuming as it is, is a page-by-page
inspection of the film with the original on hand. It will include the
endpapers and the pre-pages, and in the case of periodicals, the covers.

2. I don't know how well scanners handle colour, but there is a scanner
developed with Cornell, Xerox and, I believe, Kodak, that will scan to
film, electronic media and produce hard copy. The resulting film is high
quality and the hard copy excellent.

When I've fully read the article, I may have further comments, but we may
have moved on by then!!
