re New Yorker

One point that might remain to be made is that Baker specificially opened
his article by talking about the preservation of the COLOR comic sections -
which with quite a bit of exaggeration - have been called one of the
original American artforms. As a part-time comics historian, I'm very glad
that Bill Blackbeard saved all of the color sections that he did - and then
redonated them to Ohio State University's library - which just recently
advertised on this list for an archivist to process them.

Very few comic strips have ever been reprinted and the earlier b&w
reprintings of Outcault's Buster Brown and the like go for over $1000 now,
far beyond the reach of the average researcher. Check the platinum comics
section of ebay. There's a growing scholarship leading to archival and
library collections -see http://www.lib.msu.edu/comics/director/comres.htm
for Randy Scott's list of libraries and check out his main site for an
interesting look at the way comics can be catalogued (they catalogue strips
by topic first, then title/author). The Library of Congress currently has
an exhibit of Blondie originals, btw and is following it up w/ a show on
Herblock.
